In this campaign, our friends would like to share few words on how we have sailed thorough 2020-2021. From pandemic to stock market recovery, we managed to gain some opportunities along the way!

Some interesting messages from all of our friends' investing journey:

... from Adrianus Bias, Head of Research

The journey in the past year has been memorable to say the least. Usually, the challenge is to find the needle in the haystack. With the crisis, the haystack is now lit on fire.

Fortunately for me, the team endured and stayed committed to finding pandemic winners. They also relentlessly connected investors to the right companies.

As for me personally, my calls on AGII and SRTG paid off as both companies not only survived but thrived when the haystack was on fire.

The team and I look forward to finding more needles in the haystack. Here’s hoping that the haystack will not catch another fire anytime soon.

... from Edward Lowis, Banking, Auto, and Agriculture Analyst

Nothing prepares you for when your textbook knowledge is suddenly being so intensely questioned by recent technological changes. The finest example is in the banking sector that I happen to cover.

This calls for the need for me to adopt a beginner’s mindset. I am very fortunate that I belong to a team that constantly calls for a fresh perspective on things. This allows me to look at digital banks such as ARTO.

In the future, fintech will undoubtedly alter the landscape in the banking system. To continue adding value for my clients, I will keep on evolving with the times.

... from Christofer Kojongian, On-the-Ground Analyst

Being the On-the-Ground analyst is an opportunity along with many challenges. I must be prepared to have all eyes and ears with attention to detail on what is currently happening around in order to deliver an eye-opening report.

I am here not to work alone, but collaborating with other sectoral analyst by providing them intel that could ease their decision on making call for their coverage. My best On-the-Ground report so far is ASSA, where I went really in depth when making the report by visiting the headquarter, having conference calls, and even doing our own investigation on their facilities and couriers.

At the end of the day, I will keep learning and improve myself to provide the best report for our clients. One thing that I know from working in Sucor research is that I am surrounded by people who are very supportive and always thrive to deliver the best market research.

... from Hasan Barakwan, Coal, Metal, and O&G Analyst

Predicting the commodity cycle is a very difficult, if not impossible, task in my industry. The key is probably to persevere through difficult times and bid my time for the upcycle.

Now, with the inflation on the rise, I hope my perseverance will pay off. Rest assured, after my ANTM and MDKA calls, I will stay hungry and keep looking. My next call is BRMS, so stay tuned.

... from Irene Simbolon, On-the-Ground Analyst

One thing I value about being an On-The-Ground analyst is the chance this role gives me to work with people who have a variety of great expertise, and always have interesting perspectives to add to the table. As we rely more on primary data, through this research we could see things from many angles that sometimes might be overlooked.

Star City is one of the studies that explores how Surabaya as a city with a large economy managed to contain the spread of Covid-19 cases.

Moreover, being able to study data and information from relevant respondents about their behavior or preferences allows us to fulfill our mission to present a fresh perspective that can ultimately help all clients in making better investment decisions.

... from Irwin Saputra, Institutional Sales

I have a confession to make: I have always been a tech person at heart, but not in the right way. I used to pour my money into buying things online that inevitably turn into scrap after a few weeks.

Luckily, I was also blessed to be exposed to the tech investing scene early on, which turned my spending habit into an earning habit. Along with the analyst team last year, I was taking baby steps to explore new tech proxies. As a salesperson in Sucor, I am happy to receive endless support in this new endeavour!

We were fast to discover the lockdown winners. For instance, we wrote an extensive on the ground report on ASSA. Moreover, we also did a series of calls with the management of the company. The stock has been a big winner since we made the call.

Going forward, I am determined to convert my online shopping addiction to being addicted to find multibagger opportunities.

... from Jennifer Widjaja, Consumer Analyst

Providing timely recommendations has always been the highlight as an equity analyst!

Looking back, there were a lot of challenging moments in the consumer space. We were early to prepare for weakness in the sector. Our team was resilient enough to stay bearish in some sectors, such as cigarettes, given the potential negative surprises of the tax hikes.

Together with our On-the-Ground team, I recall our insightful look through a grass roots lens at mom-and-pop shops! We saw first hand the weak demand for cigarettes and so we wrote our report. Subsequently, the sector saw significant price correction and earnings disappointed.

Going forward, I am hoping to be a good part of the continuous consumer sector recovery. Rest assured, you will hear more from me on that front.

... from Joey Faustian, Property, Construction Analyst

At one point last year, many had written off the property sector that I cover. Totally understandable, given that many people were made redundant.

Fortunately, the property sector was quickly rejuvenated by the government’s prompt response to deal with the Covid crisis. After all, there is still a huge housing shortage in Indonesia. Moreover, property assets are still seen as a solid store of value.

Our On-the-Ground observation has played a big part in forming my conviction that the property sector has made an important bottom. My CTRA call has been rewarding as a result.

I’m glad to be a part of the Sucor research team and I trust that the team will continue to find you outstanding investment ideas.

... from Nia Yunisila, Head of Institutional Sales

There are two things that I love in this world: adding the most value to my clients and cats! So when our sales desk came up with the idea to represent our sales notes with the amusing persona of Boris, it just was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

As head of sales, I welcome and even encourage differing views within my team; there is always room to celebrate the contrarian spirit in each of us. Retaining a mindset like this ensures original insights and reports for our clients.

Among all the exciting calls we made in the past year, MDKA was one of them. When we made the call, MDKA was still deep under the investor’s radar. This call was made after an intense debate within our organisation. We intend to preserve the culture that celebrates curiosity to keep this momentum going.
